Tushingham
Old St. Chad |
| Since 1863, when the new St. Chad's was built on the
main road (A41) nearby, Old St. Chad's has been marooned in the
lovely fields that surround it.
It's main company now are the walkers on the Sandstone Trail. This long distance footpath running across Cheshire, from 32 miles Frodsham to Whitchurch, passes the front gate. |
How to find Either take a walk along the trail or park just off the A41 near Barhill Farm and take a gentle stroll across the fields Map Ref.527463 |
| The church was built in brick in 1689/90 probably on the site of a much older timber framed building. The rebuilding of 1689 took place largely with funds given by John Dod. John was born at Tushingham in 1644 and went to work in London. He married Mary, daughter of Richard Thorogood alderman of London and became a prosperous mercer in the city. | ||

| In the churchyard is a small building used as a store, inside is the original horse drawn hearse still occasionally used to carry bodies to the church across the fields. For many an intrepid walker enjoying their fitness and tarrying a while to enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful place it can be sobering thought. |

A view from the rear of the church towards the Peckforton hills on the distant horizon. The sandstone trail climbs along the top of the hills although, from the vantage points, this church is hidden in the fields. |
