Thornton-Le-Moors
St. Mary |
| Now dwarfed by the huge sprawl of Stanlow Oil Refinery this church is closed. It struggled on for most of the 20th century finally closing at the millennium. | How to find The A5117 runs for over 2 miles alongside the oil refinery between the M53 and the M56. The turning for the church is the eastern end. Map Ref 442746 |
| In the Domesday
book of 1086 there were 6 places in present day Cheshire recorded
as having a church, Thornton-le-Moors was one of them. The others
were at Frodsham, Weaverham, Lymm, Davenham, Sandbach
Raymond Richards writing in 1947 says the church is primarily the work of the 14th and 15th centuries. He also, in his chapter on this church, makes no mention of the oil refinery although it did exist at this time. In fact the juxtaposition of the church and oil refinery make a rather pleasing aesthetic contrast. |
