Marbury

Marbury village nestles between it's two meres;the dear old church which has not lost it's ancient beauty stands a little above the water but so near that it's grey tower is reflected in the surface.

T. Alfred Coward - Picturesque Cheshire, published 1903

D r. Ormerod the Cheshire Antiquarian is even more poetic for writing about Marbury nearly 2 hundred years ago he says ".. the surface of the ground undulates in a manner unusual in Cheshire and the narrow sandy roads wind among the defiles in a most picturesque way, being constantly overhung with luxuriant timber."
How to find

Hidden amongst winding lanes off the busy A49 is the tiny hamlet of Marbury Cum Quoisley. Follow the signs for Norbury and then trust to luck.

The clock face is only on this side of the tower and can only be seen by looking across "Big Mere" that stands in front of the church. Looking from the churchyard across Big Mere.

There is first mention of a church on this site in 1299 but the church was mainly built in the 15th century. The pulpit is the oldest in Cheshire. There is an odd entry in the parish registers for June 1551 when 16 people are recorded as having "dyed of ye sweating sickness as yt semeth." !!
